Idea development
Originally before this project had started I thought I wanted to do a sci-fi style story in were a whole civilisation was kept inside of walls to protect themselves from the monsters outdoors. The main character (now known as basil) kai was the first to go outside this wall and find an underground civilisation of people planning on hijacking their way into the safe city. But unfortunately I couldn’t think of a good enough plot line that wasn’t like already existing sci-fi mangas.
The designs of the characters were like todays clothes with a bit of a twist. Though looking back they were very boring and not really interesting.
After realising sci-fi was a hard genre for me to do. as I wasn’t all that into the actual aspect. And it proved incredibly hard to find a good plot. I decided to look at what I personally like.
I like the fashion and look of the Victorian era. The clothes were elegant, the language was polite and the architecture was well made and designed.
I decided I definitely wanted there to be a Victorian influence. all Though I was still stuck with the actual plot of the story.
I was told once that you should always keep stories or ideas you think up, as one day they may be useful. This proved correct as in order to gain a good plot for my manga I resorted to using an old story I came up with a long time ago. The story was about a young boy getting kidnaped by a circus that Stoll the souls of children and the main character had to play a kind of game to get out alive.
I used this story and changed it drastically to what the story is now. I kept the circus aspect and the idea of the main character having to play a game to get out. But I changed the fact that it was a traveling circus. Instead the circus is a whole world and also the circus aspect is now just a theme instead of the characters actually being a part of the circus
In the first circus story I thought of there were ticket twins that would come and collect people to come to the circus. These two were the early version of collector
After changing the story and finally being happy with it, this meant that I needed a cast of characters each with their own role.
I kept the character design of kai in my sci-fi story as I liked it but changed his clothing to the theme. I also changed his name to a more English one. This was when he became known as basil. He Was the only character from London so he had plain clothing compared to the other characters.
At this point these were the only characters that I had designed or wrote into the story.
I was going to have collector and him have a twin as they were the ticket twins but after a while I didn’t want there to be twins and instead I made collector be only one person
Collector’s(far left) design covered his arms as I wanted one of his arms to be just bone. Because somewhere along the line I decided I wanted it to have a creepy aspect to it. Though I didn’t quite think it looked good like this and ditched this idea
I added in a monster as one of the main characters because I thought it would be a nice twist instead of having a whole cast of humans though I did want him to have had a human form at one point, I thought that this would make the reader be able to feel for the character more
After a long time I went back and re-designed some of the characters.
my style had changed and my interest in shorter hair styles had developed.
I created more characters as my story got longer and had more depth to it.
In collectors original design I didn’t like that you couldn’t see his hands and I changed that. I also stopped the twins from being attached to each other. As before their sleeves were sewn together.
Basil’s design changed allot despite that fact it looks relatively the same. His hair design had changed and I had given him small eyebrows as I wanted him to be unique. His shawl gained a fur trim and his colours were swapped around
The characters of my story all already had personalities but they didn’t all have their own kwerks
And they seemed a bit un human. So I took the time to think up each and every ones personalities. Though basil had gone through the most personality changed. When basil was formally known as kai, He was cold hearted and moody. But as it developed I went for a happy and cheerful generic personality, after giving the other characters their own twists I decided to make basil extremely curious but that then proved to be out of place for the story. I thought I had finally settled on a personality with him being rude and short tempered but then after asking others, discovered that it is best to have a happy generic personality for a main character as they have to be lovable to the reader.
First off I was going to draw my manga on the computer with digital inking and screen tones, as my skills lied within using a computer to draw. Though after slowly starting to realised that every manga I had read or seen were all created traditionally I stated to become envious and worried weather I would need traditional skills to get into my dream industry.
After researching into all materials that help you create manga traditionally I wanted to do it this way more and slowly started to not use the computer for drawing.
Because of this I started to draw up the character designs traditionally. This meant that yet again they changed some more than others. Collector stayed relatively the same but most of the women I designed changed drastically and also the twins lost their extra-long leaves instead gaining gloves and a Victorian military look
Name
The name of my manga had changed allot over the time. It’s verry first name was ‘Above and below’ as the sci-fi story had a citu aboe ground and one bellow. Soon I thought it was a bit to boring and long winded so I changed it to ‘zwe’ the german word for two because of the two worlds. This name still wasn’t irelivent when I changed the plto the ot cirus one but it soon became irrelivent as the fact there were two worlds wasn’t quite as important in this story. So then I change the name to ‘Kazite’ kazite was the name of the second world for my story but dues to pronunsyation problems and the fact that it didn’t realy sound catchy or cool I changed it. Whilst looking for a new name I resorted to tranlating frases to different languages. I then found ‘crique de l’inverse’’ which stood for ‘circus of the opposite’ but his name was way to long and isnt realy easy to remember. After allot of help from people I knew I then ended up choping away at it and eneded up with the name ‘InversE’ I liked the way it sounded and it also wasn’t irrelivent to my story
