throughout doing my final major project i have learnt many things. some good and some bad.
for example this project has educated me on exactly how hard it is to create a comic. and how much work it takes.
when first starting i expected to just get strait into the drawing proses , but with the help of my research into the steps it takes to make manga/comics. i found that there are allot of things that are required before even planing pages.
you have to design every character that will be in the story. thankfully this was made allot easier because of my theme research.
researching into my chosen themes had helped me come up with basic styles of clothing and the colour schemes. for example i found it was best to stick to low unsaturated colours, you also have to figure out what is going to happen start to finish and to script it all out. only then you can carry onto the thumb nailing proses
during my experimenting stage of this project i picked up a few tricks that would make allot of the proses simpler and easier. for example drawing ruff drafts on normal paper and tracing over it for the final pages with a light box and better paper, was better than drawing and inking it all on the same piece. as the paper wore out, and the ink bleed. creating thumbnails was also a good tip i discovered. it makes planing out each page allot easier,.
during the thumb nailing proses i expected it to be quick and easy, and to be able to start sketching the ruf draft of the pages. the thumb nails ended up taking allot longer then i expected since i had to create everything from scratch. thinking of the poses and angles proved to be harder then it seems.
once i started drawing the ruff pages, things sped up. unfortunately i have a tendency to change my mind allot of the time. this was when i learnt that this project may not be the best for me. due to my short attention span and my habit of getting easily influenced. i restarted this project many times.
in the end i moved onto the concept book that i have ended up creating. at the beginning of my revised project i intended to create a physical book with many different illustration in it. of the characters, places, weapons e.c.t
unfortunately my finished piece didn't end up as i wished. since i re started my project half way through the time we were given. I didn't have enough time to create as many illustrations as i wanted. in staid my book has ended up consisting of mostly character references. there was also not as many pages as i expected so i then decided it was best to make the book digital, as the book would be incredibly thin.
Despite that im happy with the illustrations i have created for this project. they are all drawn to the best of my ability. unfortunately my ability and style has slowly started improving and changing as i drew each character. so there is some difference from the first character drawn to the last one.
i do regret not sticking to my first idea and i wish i had the full amount of knowledge and skill it requires to create a comic. i think i would have been more proud to say that i have created a comic. though im happy that i did change as it gave me a chance to develop my own style.
if i was to change anything in my finished project, there would be a couple things i would have done.
firstly i would have made the character sheets go into more detail, for example adding in side and back views for the characters bodies, not just the heads, and adding in some action poses to maybe show their fighting style or their personality. i could also have shown the different layers of the characters clothing or explain how the clothes closed or worked.
i also wish that i had more time to create some pieces of art of the characters that i could put into the book. to make it more visually appealing.
despite all the things that i could have done to improve my final outcome, im happy with my project.
and am glad that i decided on changing my idea
